Starting a conversation

I've been toying with the idea of blogging again for awhile now.

I've made plans about the things I wanted to talk about, how I'd put it together and, most importantly, how I'd get eyes to it so that it didn't become a glorified diary.

To be honest, I've gotten nowhere on any of those three things, but I figured there's no time like the present, right?

Part of me questions the decision to devote time and energy to discussions and debates that, in the broad scheme of things, matter so little. The scandal at Penn State University and the tragedy in Aurora, Colo., should send a clear message to everyone how far down the list of importance things like football and movies are (or should be).

But the more I think about it, the more appropriate it seems.

The things listed at the top of this page - sports, television, movies and music - are things that give us common ground to stand on. They are what separate us from the people responsible for things like the two events dominating headlines today.

The results of the games pale in comparison to the struggles, challenges and triumphs taking place in the lives of people around this country every day. But the existence of these diversions help give us an oasis from those struggles and a commonality through which we can interact with others.

And that's important.

My goal for this blog is to start a conversation, not just about sports, but about pop culture, everyday occurrences and, yes, even (occasionally) politics.

I want to share opinions, I want to open a dialog, and I want to disagree. I want to type in all caps to someone on occasion to stress my displeasure with their viewpoint. And I want others to do the same to me. I want to think people are crazy, and I want others to think I'm crazier. Because at the end of the day, we're still talking about things we take pleasure in, innocent things that produce much more good than bad.

Follow along and share your opinions. And come prepared, because this is the last post aimed at unification and agreement.
